Young Brits insist that there’s no longer place for a “job for life”

Young Brits today insist that there’s no longer place for a “job for life”. According to a new study conducted by JOB TODAY.  Researchers polled 2,000 people in the study and discovered that the average 16-29 year old only expects to be in his or her current job for approximately 4 months.

  • 16-29 year olds expect to be in their current job for just four and a half months
  • 43% of 16-29 year olds say it’s down to more flexibility in the job market
  • Over a quarter (28%) of 16-29 year olds say they want jobs that fit in with their lifestyle
  • Over a third (35%) of 16-29 year olds claim they expect more variation in their day to day career
  • Almost a third (32%) of 16-29 year olds have roles in the casual job sector eg retail and hospitality

In fact, the average 16-29 year expects to have six jobs in his or her lifetime. Gone are the days of the job for life, that was enjoyed by their parents and grandparents. Many believed that this down to the changing job climate with 35% of 16-29 years olds expecting more variation in their day to day career. Which would also explain why 16% of 16-29 years old have more than one job, in comparison to 86% of 30-44 years who have just one job.

According to the data, 16-29 year olds topped the list spending the least time in just one job, staying for less time in one job than their parents. Half (50%) of all working Brits put this down to more flexibility in the job market, with men expecting to stay for longer in their current role than women.  Adults in Bristol and Plymouth came out the lowest with the average, with results showing that they’re expecting to spend just one month in a job, whereas London had the highest average of young adults expecting to stay for at least five months. In fact, 39% of Bristolians say they want casual jobs that fit in with their lifestyle explaining why they have topped the list.

Founder of JOB TODAY, Polina Montano said, “We are seeing the demand for casual jobs soar and that’s why JOB TODAY is so popular amongst young workers – we are providing them with jobs in a matter of hours which is exactly what they want. Just 8% of 16-29 year olds work in the medical profession and 3% in teaching whilst 32% work in the casual jobs industry, eg hospitality/retail work with almost a quarter (24%) of 16-29 year olds having more than one job.
