NHS organisation awarded menopause friendly accreditation
5/03/2023 - NHS Business Services Authority
Menopause experts Henpicked: Menopause In The Workplace have awarded The Menopause Friendly Accreditation to the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA).
The Menopause Friendly Accreditation is industry-recognised and the only accreditation that sets clear standards which must be met. As such, it is truly meaningful and considered by many as a badge of excellence for menopause in the workplace. In order to be accredited, menopause friendly employers must show evidence to an independent panel of their effectiveness in six key areas: culture; policies & practices; training; engagement; facilities and evaluation.
The NHSBSA was awarded the accreditation for creating an inclusive culture where everyone feels able to talk about the menopause and colleagues are given the support they need.
Colleagues are supported at all stages of their menopause journey. This has included setting up a ‘Menopause Champion’ network, a group of trained volunteers including women and men, who support others through their training and lived experiences. It also includes monthly virtual menopause cafés run by the champions, guidance and training for managers, and access to mental health support.
Menopause cafés have been tailored to take lived experiences into account, for instance a session was held during Black History Month to focus on the challenges and experiences of minority ethnic colleagues.
Michael Brodie, Chief Executive at NHS Business Services Authority, said: “For far too long the menopause has been a taboo subject in society. With the help of our Menopause Network (our colleague support network) we want to create a level playing field, so that the menopause doesn’t hold colleagues back at an age when many are at the peak of their career. To achieve this, together we’re creating an environment in which colleagues and their managers feel comfortable talking about it, so that we can offer support.
“In particular, I want to thank our Menopause Champions, who work to support, signpost and enable open conversations, and the many colleagues who’ve joined our cafés, shared their own personal journeys and encouraged others to do the same.”
Deborah Garlick, CEO of Henpicked: Menopause in the Workplace added: “NHSBSA is to be congratulated for the extraordinary impact of its menopause in the workplace activities and this Accreditation is very well deserved,” said Deborah Garlick, CEO of Henpicked: Menopause In The Workplace. “The NHS has a particularly high proportion of female staff so being menopause friendly is of paramount importance. NHSBSA is leading by example and I hope this encourages other NHS trusts and affiliated organisations to follow in their footsteps.”
